I-Spy: "The Best Wedding Reception...Ever!" by Peter Merry

As a wedding planner and all-round lover of beautiful weddings, I am constantly on the look out for great ideas to make weddings even more kick-ass instead of the usual dull formal event that people have grown to associate weddings with. After all, its the biggest celebration of a couple's lives and everyone wants theirs to be an event to be remembered (for all the right reasons of course!).

I chanced upon this book in the library the other day (and you'll be delighted at the selection of wedding related books you might be able to find at your local branch, especially if you can't afford to go out and buy them all yourself) and it was one of the best finds I've come across lately:

Too often couples get caught up in choosing the perfect dress, the right flowers, tasting the food, and working out the logistics but what tends to get overlooked is the guests' experience of the event. Imagine going to a wedding where the tables have beautiful linens and stunning centerpieces. You might appreciate the details and it may even be a conversation starter among the guests. But after ten minutes, what else is there to look at?

The weddings that I'd consider to be the most successful would be those where the guests were entertained throughout the event (though not overwhelmed by an overly packed schedule) and left them talking about how great it was afterwards. This is a great book in helping you to accomplish just that. It starts with defining wedding entertainment and goes on to advise you on the various players you'll need in your wedding to pull off the entertainment, as well as a variety of games or variations of traditions that you can incorporate into your event, depending on your personal style and theme. What I also liked was that he featured couples from the events that he'd done, showing what their reception program looked like and including a small write up on a particular aspect of each wedding in which the couple had personalized the event to suit them.

What's key is that your wedding should reflect you and be a celebration of your lives and love. Look for ways to personalize it and make your guests feel included, so that they feel that their presence at your event made all the difference, rather than just being there for the sake of being your audience. Your guests will be talking about your wedding for weeks to come thereafter, for the right reasons!
